5 randoms | H54F #22


1 - we've decided to start a new tradition: christmas tree take-down on superbowl sunday. 

2 - i ordered my first-ever iwyp tee! see this month's here - i'm so excited!

3 - this weekend we are heading "home". i don't even know whether i should call that place "home" anymore. we've been living away from it for nearly a year-and-a-half but it's our hometown and we have all intentions of returning to it in the future...so "home" it is!

4 - our weekend at "home" includes seeing my bro + future-sis-in-law, seeing one friend's new family of three, and seeing another friend's family of three. when did we get so old to have friends with dogs and babies? (and how can i get one?....)

5 - my husband rocks. he rocks my socks (and other things) off. sorry, dad. 
i don't know what i'd do without that man full of spunk, dreams, silliness, and passion.

Do You Ever... (My husband's lecture...)

Just the other night, Parker and I got into a fight...

Parker: When can we have a baby?
Me: Parker, it's just not the right time, what with where we live and everything. We've talked about this already.
Parker: Well, what about a puppy? I want a puppy.
Me: Yeah, I want a puppy, too. But we live above a lumberyard. I don't want to get a puppy until we have a yard and a block for that puppy to play on.
Parker: Well, all of our friends are getting puppies and / or having babies so I'm getting jealous. And I want a cute, little puppy and a cute, little baby.
Me: Parker. Ohmygosh. We've talked about all of this - don't make me be the bad person.

Then we continued to get into an argument for a few minutes during which I was telling him that it must be nice to always be the one wanting, wishing, dreaming, whatever. I told him it's not always easy being the realistic, logical, boring one. He proceeded to sort of start lecturing me. Although, you know what, it wasn't a bad lecture. 

He told me I need to dream more. That sometimes I need to just talk about things that would be 'cool' even if they're not going to happen. I told him that I can't because one of us needs to be logical or else we'd be living in la-la land. He said that if I would just let myself talk about 'what if' every once in a while, he would actually step up and be the realistic person. He was telling me to dream - think outside the box - live with my feet off the ground. 

And that, is why I love that man.

Since that night, I've been trying to do that more.

When we talk about dreams / plans / goals, I try to talk about things that might not be the most realistic option.

I try to listen, be supportive, and engage when he talks about how awesome something would be (even if it's not very likely). 

He's gotten me thinking about how many things I do something because it's what someone expects me to do; how many things I don't say because it wouldn't be 'like me'; all the things I don't do because they're not logical. 

And how boring is that 100% logical, realistic, feet-on-the-ground life?

Do you ever dream? Beyond situations that are reasonable or realistic.

Do you ever plan nothing? And I mean, plan to do nothing. Let yourself sit down, watch Netflix, or flip through a magazine without an agenda.

Do you ever read a book? Leave the unwashed dishes and dirty laundry and let yourself fall into a book.

Do you ever speak your mind? At work, with your friends, at a bar - without worrying about what other people might think.

Do you ever feel sorry for yourself? Because it's ok to have a pity party every once in awhile. We're certainly not perfect.

Do you ever buy a sexy bra? Just because it makes you feel attractive and will make your man giddy?

Do you ever drink too much wine? Have a tequila shot. Or have some beers at the game, without worrying about tomorrow.

Do you ever write an e-mail to a blogger, just because their post inspired you, made you laugh, or made you cry?

Do you ever text a friend just to say you're thinking about them?

Do you ever eat pizza for dinner because it's just easier than cooking?

Do you ever wear your glasses to work? Without worrying about what other people will think.

Do you ever wear a sweatshirt on a Tuesday? Without worrying about what other people will think.

Do you ever stop worrying?

Do you ever cry? Just because sometimes crying out the tears helps your soul?

Do you ever just sit down and write a blog post? Without thinking, planning, or worrying what your readers will think.

Do you ever allow yourself to just be you and dream?

Our Wedding {Part 3}

So my original thought with these wedding posts (see part 1 and part 2) was that I had never talked about any our wedding day specifics on the blog and should probably do so, considering it's probably been the most life-changing, beautiful day of my life thus far (again, until we make babies). I'm not gonna lie, they've probably become some of my favorite posts. Why? Because 1) who doesn't love wedding pictures and 2) they are just fun and easy to write. Unfortunately when I planned these out, I split up that special day only into 3 parts, because I didn't want this space to turn into newlywed-ville or wedding-city. But now I'm a little sad this is already part 3. So again, I'm not gonna lie, don't be surprised if there's more wedding day sharing on this space because...I just can't help myself. 

And really, I just love love.

So without further unnecessary ado, here's what you get to see today:

Get Fit, Feel Confident, Be Healthy Link-Up #4

Man alive, I am getting a late start on this today! You would not believe the weekend I have had: I went with Parker's hockey team to their tournament this weekend - it was a bus trip {just another part of being a "hockey wife"} We were supposed to get home yesterday but all of the roads were closed due to shitty ND/MN January weather. It's 10:15 now and we are just leaving after finally getting the bus started. 

Needless to say, I don't have a lot of time to sit and write this morning, mostly because I've had 3 nights of too little sleep and might possibly be a little hungover. However, I did do well last week on meeting my goals, until I ate pizza and bar food at the hockey tournament this weekend. But I'm ready to get back into my good routine again this week. I am feeling stronger, more toned, energized, and just better overall now that I've gotten into exercising again.

You know you're a hockey wife when...


In which of these pictures does Parker have the happiest, most genuine, glowing smile? The one where he's holding his brand new Bauer APX skates or the one where he's holding me? It's ok, I know the answer. I've spent the past 10 years of my life knowing and loving Parker so I am well aware that I was not his first love. And yet I chose to marry him anyway :) Which brings me to...

 
You know you're a hockey wife when...

1. Your husband smiles bigger when he's holding new skates than when he's holding you.
 
2. Your wedding anniversaries have been celebrated by attending an NHL hockey game.
 
3. You decorate the Christmas tree with your friend (Malbec) while your husband is at hockey practice. Also, this happens shortly before the 15th of December (10 days before Christmas) once the practice schedule finally allows him to get the tree up.
 
4. Your, let's just call it, "love life" definitely revolves around dry-land, chalk talk, and practice schedules.
 
5. You spent the second part of your evening on NYE at an NAHL Juniors hockey game.
 
6. You don't play Monopoly, you play Pond Hockey-opoly.
 
7. 1/3 of the pictures your husband posts to his Instagram account involve plans to decorate parts of your future house to mimick a hockey arena.
 
8. Your bucket list includes the goal to make it to all 32 NHL hockey arenas to see a game.

10. You will willingly choose to spend a total of 14+ hours on a coach bus with an entire hockey team of 12-year old boys and their parents to spend the weekend at a youth hockey tournament in a freezing cold town, just so you don't have to spend another weekend husband-less.

Our Wedding {Part 2}

I finally have gotten around to sharing some of my favorite pictures from our wedding day. Last week I shared pictures of the moments from getting ready until our first look. Today I'm sharing snapshots from the moments right before walking down the aisle until our first kiss as husband and wife.

We didn't have a videographer at our wedding ceremony. At the time I cared the most about our regular photographer and actually thought recording the ceremony sounded kind of like a silly idea. Now, looking back, part of me wishes that we would have. (I say this while I have no idea what it would cost to have someone videotape your ceremony.) But the reason I say this is because it's all sort of a blur now. And not a I-had-one-too-many-glasses-of-champagne kind of blur. It's just that there was so much hype, adrenaline flowing, and constant excitement that I feel like I can't remember a lot of the small details. This is one of the huge reasons why I am thankful for an amazing photographer to capture the details of the day. I also have learned and / or been reminded of some of the smaller details just from reminiscing with friends and family.

+ I do remember that I actually didn't cry while saying our vows. I really didn't want to be choking, coughing, or doing anything else unattractive while trying to get through them so I tried really hard to keep it together.

+ I did not remember that I was shaking at the back of the church while standing arm-in-arm with my dad, waiting for our turn to head down the aisle. I do remember that we had a pep talk but definitely don't remember all of the rush of emotions that were probably happening at the time.

+ I don't remember looking at all our friends and family surrounding us in the pews. I'm quite certain I had my eyes on the prize and tried to keep looking forward to avoid nerves and tears.

+ I do remember feeling like the most beautiful girl in the world, as every bride should. It's not because of your killer dress or flattering updo, but because to that man waiting for you at the end of the aisle, you are the most beautiful girl in the world.

 
 
 
 
 
 

And I definitely remember feeling like the happiest, luckiest, most ecstatic woman in the world.

Blates, Babies, & Bridesmaid dresses! {Weekend Recap}

I know it's Tuesday but I had such a great weekend I just had to share it, even if it is already the second day of the work week and we're already looking forward to next weekend. I went home this weekend by myself because Parker had a few out of town hockey games for the team that he coaches. Note: being apart has nothing to do with how great my weekend was. I still love that man very much.

Friday: I drove the 4 hours and got into town around 4:00 so I had a few hours to run errands at home. What exactly is so awesome about running errands in your hometown, driving the familiar streets, and walking the familiar halls at the mall? I just love it. And it makes me super happy. I had the evening alone to go out and be young & crazy relax and fall asleep on the couch before 10:00.

Saturday AM: I had a wedding shower for a friend that I have known since I was 6 years old: pre-braces, -boyfriends, and -bras. I think old friends will always be great.
I really, and I mean really, wanted to keep the chalkboard mason jars for myself.

Saturday PM: First of all I sucked-it-in while I got measured for my MOH dress for my brother's wedding next August. Then my brother, Alyssa, and I went out to lunch:
Yes, this sushi-virgin popped her cherry.

Saturday Evening: I drove down to the lake Saturday afternoon to have enough time to get ready before meeting Laura for my first-ever blate! We'd never met before - but we were pros at tweeting, snapping, and stalking each other's blogs ;) Saturday night we met for dinner at a nearby restaurant at the lake and the funny thing is I wasn't even nervous. I felt like I was getting together with an old friend, not a girl I'd never met before. That's what I think is so cool about blogging. The supportive, caring, and encouraging community that we all are a part of is something we should be so thankful for.
 

Our blate had no awkward silences, lots of laughs, and constant conversation. At one point we looked at the time and we had been at dinner for 3 hours! After dinner we went to go check out the Ice Hole bar that we had both heard of but never been to. It's MN Lake Country and this bar is out on the frozen lake! You drive on the lake to park in the "parking lot" where they have cleared snow. It was so-so fun! We had a quick bump there before parting ways for the night (next time we're totally having a sleepover!) The Ice Hole bar is the red ice house on the left. And in case you are unfamiliar with winter, that is a frozen lake.

Sunday: I finally got to meet my friend's 2 week old baby girl. This 25 year old girl was one content lady holding that bundle of snuggles. 
Totally great, right? :)

6 tips to maintain a Healthy Routine | GF-FC-BH Link-Up #3

Hello hello! Did you guys have a great weekend or what? I loved my weekend :) Lots of new, fun, pretty exciting things went on, at least compared to every other weekend of mine that basically involves hanging out, completing a few to-dos, and time that flies by. You'll have to stop back tomorrow for my weekend recap because today I'm sharing how my journey to Get Fit, Feel Confident, and Be Healthy is going.

Last week was my first official week making healthier food choices and working out. My goal right now is to work out 5 days a week - last week I made it 4 days a week. I consider that to be not too shabby considering before last week I was going 0 times a week. Even after just one week of exercising again I feel so.much.better. It's funny how, even though your body doesn't visibly change right away, it certainly feels different. I feel stronger, more toned, more energized, and just plain happier. Gotta love those endorphins I guess. They're almost as great as good friends and good wine.

My biggest challenge when it comes to living a healthier life is time - finding the time to plan ahead, make healthy choices, and settle into a good routine. Last week I tried a few new tricks. I definitely think that trying these out helped me a ton last week to be pretty successful in meeting my goals:


1. Write your workouts in your planner.
I love my planner. We're best friends. I write everything in there. If it's in the planner it has to happen. Since my biggest struggle is finding/making time to get my sweat on, I scheduled out my workouts last week and wrote them in my planner. I made all of my scheduled workouts except for one.

2. Plan out your dinners for the week.
Last Sunday Parker and I wrote down what we planned to have for dinner each night. Even if the plan was leftovers, or breakfast, or on-your-own we wrote it down. Planning that out really eliminates the urge to just grab something or get a Papa Murphy's pizza. We actually followed all of our planned meals, too.

3. Prep any fresh fruits or veggies as soon as you get home from the grocery store.
I think this one goes without saying: if you do this, you will actually eat your fresh fruits and veggies. Let's be honest, if you're in a rush to get out the door, grab your lunch, or throw together dinner, you don't want to have to rinse the blueberries or cut up the celery. We've started trying to do all the prep before we even put the groceries away.

4. Always have a healthy snack with you.
I've been trying to always have a piece of fruit and some nuts with me so that if I get hungry I've got something. This really helps me to make good snack choices and keeps me from getting to the point where I'm so starving I could eat an entire elephant and it's friends.

5. Use an app or program to track your progress.
The reason I say this is because you will learn a lot. I use MyFitness Pal and try to log my food and workout each day. I don't obsess about getting everything exact; I use it more so that I have a journal log to look back on. Plus, I have learned a lot just by looking up the nutrition facts for different foods.

6. Make a kick-ass workout playlist.
I don't care if it's Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, or Ke$ha; having a fun, blood-pumping, git-er-goin playlist might actually make you look forward to your workouts :)

Total weight loss: -4.2 pounds

Sweat, Lipstick, and Dealing with It | H54F #21

It's Friiiday, Friiiiday, gotta get down on Friday!

I love Fridays. And weekends. Almost as much as I love summer or wine.

1 -- I started exercising again this week and it.felt.great. I mean, not really, because I can't laugh, sit up, lie down, or raise my arms above my head. But other than that, it felt good to get a good sweat again.

2 -- New planner = a need for a dozen colorful felt tip markers. They were on sale.

3 -- I'm obsessed with my new mittens that are super soft inside and I can pull the ends down to move my fingers or put on lipstick.

4 -- I have officially embraced having our Christmas tree up, fully lit and decorated, on January 18th. It's festive and makes January just a little less blah. (Mostly we just haven't had time to do the take-down.)

5 -- I am packed to head home this weekend for an old friend's baby shower, meet another friend's new baby girl, and meet Laura in person!

Do I get to keep my shoes on or not?

Guys. Seriously, I need your help. I have a wedding shower to go to on Saturday morning. {Side note: the bride and I have been friends since 1st grade. 1st grade! I mean, we played Donkey Kong on Nintendo and probably shared scrunchies.} So obviously I've been thinking about what I'm going to wear to this thing since Sunday night because outfits and social engagements just don't come easily for me. I finally came to a conclusion: I'm going to wear this cute silver / gray / bronze sweater (that covers my butt) over black leggings with my black boots that I am loving right now.

The exact same boot in brown.
Perfect. Done deal. I could fold up the outfit and lay it out right now until I need to pack. 

That seemed too easy. So naturally my ocd, high-strung brain has to make it much more complicated. I started thinking to myself: What if I have to take my boots off at the door? This outfit will not look good without the boots. Plus, pulling off knee-high boots in the entryway of a wedding shower just doesn't sound like something I need to experience.

Which leads me to my Question Of The Day: Do I get to keep my shoes on or not?

Our Wedding {Part 1}

Just the other day I realized I've barely shared anything about our wedding day on this here bloggy blog. I didn't start blogging until after we were married, otherwise I'm sure those posts would've been filled with omg's, look at this centerpiece, how will I ever choose a napkin, etc etc etc. Even though my blog is post-wedding and even though this day was over 3 years ago, I want to share a little about it because it was literally the best day of my life. I suppose it will continue to be the best day of my life until I make babies or something bigger like that. If I could relive any day, I would choose September 24th, 2010. I was the happiest girl in the world that day and didn't think I could possibly love that man any more than I already did. Boy, was I wrong. Love is a funny thing: just when you think your heart is as full as it could possibly be, there somehow becomes room for just a little more love.

Looking back at the pictures I feel like we look like kids, and I suppose we practically were - I was 22 and Parker had just turned 21. We were surrounded by the best friends and family. We had a beautiful ceremony, a nice sunny day, and danced like crazy with our favorite people all night long.

And by the way, I did exaggerate a bit. We didn't have special napkins or anything.

Parker brought me a bouquet of roses to my parent's place that morning and we exchanged wedding day cards. We love doing cards and do them for most big holidays - I would highly recommend getting a card or writing a letter to each other on your wedding day. It will be so fun to look back at them one day and remember exactly how you were feeling.

Wedding Party: Parker's best friend {Best Man}, my best friend {Maid of Honor}, Me, Parker, Parker's sister, and my brother. Also, my younger cousin (and the only other girl in the family!) was a Junior Bridesmaid, too.


I love this picture because all of us girls were waiting in the back hallway of the church for the ceremony to start. My dad was patiently taking it all in and stayed so calm amidst 4 giddy girls holding heavy bouquets.

Eat: Loaded Pretzel Rods

It's so horrible that yesterday I was writing about how I've been eating better, trying to exercise, and need to lose weight and today, this:


But I've been dying to share this recipe with you since Christmas because if you've never had these, you're missing out. Big time. We make them at Christmastime because basically that's the time of year when you make and devour anything that could be in any way healthy. I'm starting to think though that I should probably just make these all year along. I'm also starting to think that writing this post right now is not going to help in any way in keeping me on track with healthy eating today.

What you'll need:
Pretzel rods (I normally buy 1 bag)
Mini chocolate chips
Mini m&ms
Heath toffee bits
Caramels (I normally buy 1 bag)
1 can evaporated milk

*The recipe does not involve specific measurements because you can make it how you want to make it. Don't like heath? Leave it out! Wanna add something else to the mix? Go ahead! You are in control here - you go girl!

What you'll do:
1. Unwrap the caramels into a microwave safe bowl. Add about 3/4 cup of evaporated milk. Melt the caramels in the microwave, stirring occassionally so that it doesn't burn. Continue adding evaporated milk as you stir until the caramel mixture reaches your desired consistency. You want it to be melted, but you don't want it to be too runny to stay on the pretzel rods.

2. Combine your "toppings mixture" (chips, m&ms, heath) in a bowl and set aside.

3. Cover the pretzel rods in caramel by dipping, spooning, or any other way you can. 

4. Quickly move the caramel-covered rod to the toppings bowl. Again, in any way you can, cover the caramel with your toppings.

5. Lay your loaded pretzel rod on wax paper or a cookie sheet to cool. I normally set them outside to speed up this process.
 
 
 

Now that my mouth is watering I'm going to go help myself to some tea and an egg. It doesn't really sound quite as good after editing these scrumptious pictures.
